UN Security Council Calls Emergency Meeting After Ukraine's Appeal

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council will convene an urgent session Monday following Ukraine's formal appeal, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced.

Kyiv submitted its request "in the wake of Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine, which included the use of an intermediate-range ballistic missile," Sybiha stated Saturday on US social media platform X.

The 8 pm GMT meeting will address Moscow's "flagrant breaches of the UN Charter," he indicated, pressing Security Council members to demonstrate solidarity by demanding cessation of hostilities, civilian protection, and unwavering backing for Ukraine's territorial integrity.

"Russian attacks undermine international security and peace efforts by the United States, European states, and other partners," the senior Ukrainian diplomat declared.

He further urged the international community to "act now" to intensify pressure "on the aggressor," guarantee accountability, and "restore a lasting peace."

Russia characterized its actions as retaliation for what it labeled a Ukrainian "terrorist attack" on President Vladimir Putin's residence in Novgorod on Dec. 29, 2025, prompting strikes on Ukrainian targets.

Sybiha rejected any assault on Putin's residence and confirmed Kyiv had petitioned for an emergency Security Council gathering after Russia deployed an Oreshnik-type missile against Ukraine.
