Zelensky Criticizes US Oil Waiver Extension for Russia

(MENAFN) According to reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly objected to a recent decision by the United States to prolong an exemption that allows Russia to continue certain oil sales despite ongoing sanctions.

The extension permits countries to buy Russian oil and petroleum products that had already been loaded onto ships before restrictions took effect, with the allowance now lasting until May 16. US officials have justified the move as a temporary measure aimed at stabilizing global energy supplies, particularly in light of disruptions linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

Zelensky, however, expressed firm opposition to the decision, warning of its implications for Ukraine amid the ongoing war. He stated: "every dollar paid for Russian oil is money for the war"

Sanctions targeting Russia have been widely enforced since Moscow launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, under President Vladimir Putin.

The broader regional situation has further complicated global energy dynamics. Escalating hostilities involving the US and Israel have triggered retaliatory actions by Iran, which have extended beyond military targets to include energy infrastructure and civilian locations in allied countries across the region.

In addition, according to reports, Iran has effectively restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route responsible for transporting roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, intensifying concerns over global energy supply stability.
