Zelensky discusses critical points with Norwegian PM, European Council president
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held separate phone conversations on Tuesday with Norway’s prime minister and the president of the European Council, addressing security assurances, sanctions on Russia, and Ukraine’s path toward EU membership.
According to reports, Zelenskyy told Norway’s Premier Jonas Gahr Store that their discussion centered on the results of his recent meetings in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders. He underlined that the most significant outcome was the advancement toward firm security commitments. “We are confident that peace can be reliable and lasting, and security guarantees are the key to this,” he stated, noting that Kyiv and Oslo would also keep working together in areas such as energy cooperation.
In his call with European Council President Antonio Costa, Zelenskyy highlighted the council’s review of the Washington talks, describing the conclusions as “an important step toward ending this war and ensuring security for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.”
He further confirmed that work was already in progress on the EU’s 19th package of sanctions against Moscow, stressing that “pressure must be increased until Russia takes real steps to stop the war.” Zelenskyy also underscored the need for solidarity among EU nations regarding Ukraine’s membership path and the launch of negotiation clusters.
The Ukrainian leader had just concluded meetings in Washington the previous day with President Trump and European officials, where discussions revolved around long-term defense guarantees and the structure of a possible peace process with Russia. These conversations are expected to continue in a trilateral format involving Russian President Vladimir Putin.
