Trump States Progress on Russia-Ukraine Talks
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump noted the challenge of juggling multiple crises, including the upcoming talks between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday.
On Ukraine, Trump said he was cautiously optimistic, stating that he thinks the US is doing very well with Ukraine and Russia, suggesting that maybe some positive developments could emerge. He stressed the human toll of the war, citing an estimated 25,000 deaths per month, and called the conflict senseless.
Trump also criticized former President Joe Biden’s handling of aid to Ukraine, claiming the previous administration spent $350 billion. He emphasized that under his approach, allies shoulder more of the financial burden, explaining that European countries pay the US for weapons through NATO arrangements.
Despite the focus on cost, Trump said his primary aim remains humanitarian: he wants to save people from dying.
He acknowledged that progress has been slower than anticipated due to the deep animosity between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, describing it as a key obstacle to a faster resolution.
