Trump Says Russia Kept Its Promise to Halt Attacks on Ukraine

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin followed through on a commitment to suspend strikes on Kiev and other key Ukrainian cities for one week, as Ukraine faced severe winter-related power shortages.

Trump said the pause followed reports that Moscow and Kiev had reached what was described as an ‘energy ceasefire’. He explained that he personally appealed to Putin to agree to a limited halt in attacks “because of the extreme cold.”

Russian officials later confirmed the arrangement, with the Kremlin’s spokesperson noting that the temporary suspension was set to remain in effect until February 1. The stated aim was “creating favorable conditions for negotiations,” in reference to Russia-Ukraine talks being facilitated by the United States in Abu Dhabi.

Addressing journalists at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said the pause lasted “Sunday to Sunday.” He added, “And he hit [them] hard last night. No, he kept his word on that,” before remarking on the seriousness of the situation: “It’s a lot… We’ll take anything, because it’s really, really cold over there.”

When asked whether he was dissatisfied that the ceasefire was not prolonged, Trump replied that his priority was for Putin to “end the war.”

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky acknowledged on Monday that Russia had refrained from launching direct missile or drone strikes against major energy facilities during the pause. However, he claimed that fighting continued along front-line positions. On February 3, Zelensky accused Moscow of breaching the agreement with overnight attacks, while Russian officials countered that the temporary moratorium had already concluded.

Ukraine’s electricity network has been under intense pressure following repeated missile and drone attacks, leading to widespread rolling blackouts as temperatures in many areas dropped below minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Russian authorities have said their strikes are aimed at energy facilities linked to Ukraine’s defense production, describing them as a response to Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russian territory, including strikes on key infrastructure and residential locations. Moscow has consistently insisted that it does not target civilians.
