Zelensky Refutes Feb. 24 Presidential Election Plans
The Ukrainian leader informed journalists that electoral proceedings would commence only following the establishment of robust security guarantees and a cessation of hostilities with Russia.
Addressing the prospect of diplomatic engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky indicated Ukraine's willingness to participate in discussions at venues proposed by U.S. officials—including the United States, Europe, or neutral territories, explicitly excluding Russia and Belarus.
Zelensky further clarified that American officials have not leveraged security assurances as a mechanism to compel Ukraine toward any specific electoral timeline.
The denial comes after the Financial Times published claims that Zelensky planned to unveil election and referendum strategies on Feb. 24—marking four years since the Ukraine-Russia conflict erupted—according to sources with knowledge of the preparations. The publication additionally reported that the Trump administration has demanded Ukraine conduct a referendum by May 15, cautioning that noncompliance could undermine proposed U.S. security commitments.
