Zelensky Refuses to Discuss Historic Issues with Putin
Putin has often cited shared history and claimed that Russia has a duty to protect Russian-speaking minorities in Ukraine. He has also framed the conflict’s resolution around addressing these historical grievances and Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.
Speaking to Piers Morgan, Zelensky dismissed these arguments. “With respect to history, I don’t want to lose time on these issues. It’s not even interesting for me why he began this war. I don’t want to speak about it because I don’t have the time,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader added in a profanity-laden statement: “I don’t need to waste time on historic issues, reasons why he began [the war], all the bulls**t he is raising with the Americans, et cetera. To end this war and to [find a] diplomatic way, I don’t need all this historical s**t, really.”
The Kremlin has stated that Putin would only meet Zelensky at the final stage of negotiations to sign a peace treaty. Moscow also claims that Zelensky’s term expired in May 2024 and no longer recognizes him as a legitimate head of state, while Zelensky has refused to hold elections citing martial law.
Moscow continues to insist that the conflict’s origins and territorial changes—such as Crimea and Donbass joining Russia after referendums in 2014 and 2022—cannot be ignored, describing Ukraine as an “artificial state” created by early 20th-century Bolshevik border decisions.
