Zelenskyy Says POW Swap with Russia Imminent
Following a closed-door briefing delivered by Ukraine's negotiating team — covering sensitive aspects of the discussions that could not be handled remotely — Zelenskyy praised his delegates' efforts and noted that US envoys are actively working to keep the negotiation process on constructive footing, with Kyiv's full backing.
"We believe that real opportunities to end the war with dignity still exist, and the world's ability to pressure the aggressor could significantly help ensure that a dignified peace replaces the war," Zelenskyy wrote on X, the US social media platform.
The Ukrainian leader expressed cautious optimism about the pace of diplomacy, urging that talks resume within days. "We count on another round of negotiations being organized very soon, as early as this February, and on that round becoming truly productive," he said, adding that Kyiv's positions on the most contentious outstanding issues are already prepared ahead of the next session.
Zelenskyy confirmed that priorities for Ukraine's team — both in the trilateral format and in direct engagement with Washington — have been clearly defined, and that a potential leaders-level meeting could prove pivotal. "The team must also secure conditions for progress on humanitarian issues – POW (prisoners of war) exchanges must continue. We expect that an exchange will be possible very soon," he added.
Meanwhile, in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a Friday session with permanent members of the country's Security Council, where he received a firsthand briefing from presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky — who led Russia's delegation at the Geneva talks. The substance of that closed council meeting has not yet been made public.
The Geneva negotiations, held February 17–18, marked the third round of peace talks between the two warring nations, following earlier sessions in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi in both January and earlier this month.
