Putin Authorizes Private Guards to Use Military Weapons Against Drones

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law Monday allowing private security personnel to temporarily use military-grade firearms and ammunition to counter drones amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to reports.

The law covers private security organizations protecting strategic facilities, including fuel and energy sites. Vasily Piskaryov, head of the State Duma Committee on Security and one of the law’s authors, said it permits guards to use combat automatic small arms available to the Russian National Guard.

“The proposed measure will allow for a more rapid and effective response to security threats, as well as significantly enhance the anti-terrorist protection of critical facilities and the citizens working there,” Piskaryov stated.

He noted that more than 1,000 drone attacks on fuel and energy facilities have been recorded since 2024. Piskaryov also emphasized that the law establishes a system for monitoring, storing, and managing the firearms issued to these security organizations.

The federal law was published and came into effect on the same day, Monday.
