Putin Warns of Rising Terror Threats in Russia

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin sounded the alarm Tuesday over a surge in terrorist threats facing Russia, directly accusing Ukraine of deploying what he called openly terrorist tactics to blunt Moscow's battlefield momentum.

Putin delivered his remarks at a high-level security meeting convened to address protective measures surrounding a series of nationwide elections scheduled throughout the year — a gathering that underscored the Kremlin's deepening concern over domestic vulnerabilities.

"The risks of terrorist threats are growing. The structures of international terrorism, radical and extremist groups continue their subversive work. Moreover, we know that the Kyiv regime and its patrons have switched to openly terrorist methods," Putin said, accusing Ukraine of relying "on terror, both against military personnel and against civilians."

Despite the escalating threats, Putin insisted that such methods would ultimately fail to shift the trajectory of the conflict — though he acknowledged the threats demand active and sustained containment.

Ukraine's drone campaign against civilian infrastructure drew particular condemnation from the Russian leader, who pointed to recent strikes on energy facilities in Tuapse as a stark example of attacks capable of triggering severe environmental consequences.

"Strikes using drones on civilian infrastructure are being carried out more and more often. The latest example is the strikes on energy facilities in Tuapse, which could potentially lead to serious environmental consequences," he said.

With Russia preparing for its State Duma ninth convocation elections in September — alongside sweeping regional and local races — Putin framed security as the cornerstone of the entire electoral process.

"Our priority is the security of all participants in the elections, particularly those on the Ukrainian territories currently under Russia's control," the president said.
