Iran’s Top Diplomat Holds High-Level Talks with Putin

(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Russia as diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing US-Israeli conflict involving Iran remain stalled, according to reports.

Araghchi arrived in St. Petersburg on Monday as part of a regional diplomatic tour aimed at coordinating positions with allied states amid rising tensions with Washington and West Jerusalem.

During his visit, he held talks with Putin as well as senior Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of Russia’s military intelligence.

As stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the meeting carried significant geopolitical weight. “the importance of this conversation is difficult to overestimate in terms of how the situation around Iran and in the Middle East is developing,” he said.

Diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington has reportedly stalled. According to reports, US President Donald Trump recently canceled a planned visit by American envoys to Islamabad over the weekend and stated that Iran “can call” if it wishes to resume dialogue.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have argued that direct negotiations with the United States are not viable while Washington maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports and Israeli military actions continue in Lebanon.

Russia has increasingly positioned itself as a key intermediary and strategic partner for Iran throughout the escalation. Araghchi’s discussions in Moscow are expected to focus on recent ceasefire efforts and coordination of a joint diplomatic strategy in response to the crisis.
