Russia, China Slam US Arctic Militarization
(MENAFN) Russia and China jointly raised alarm Wednesday over what they characterized as "the growing militarization of the Arctic by the US and its allies," issuing a pointed declaration from Beijing as Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping wrapped up high-level talks.
The warning came embedded in a sweeping joint declaration on deepening bilateral strategic coordination and good-neighborliness, in which both nations underscored the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arctic states.
Moscow and Beijing said they were committed to preserving the Arctic as "a territory of peace, stability and low military-political tension" — framing their position as a direct rebuke to what they described as destabilizing Western activity in the region.
"The parties express concern over the militarization of the high latitudes by the United States and its allies, reaffirm their commitment to the norms of international law in the Arctic," the declaration stated.
Both nations also called for "constructive dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation" in the region through multilateral frameworks, specifically naming the Arctic Council as a key vehicle for engagement.
The declaration lands against a backdrop of intensifying geopolitical rivalry in the Arctic, where Russia, the US, and NATO members have all significantly expanded military activity and strategic planning in recent years — making the region an increasingly contested frontier in great-power competition.
