Putin Accuses Western Media of Ignoring Starobelsk Tragedy

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized Western media outlets for their coverage of the conflict, accusing them of focusing on Russia’s military response while ignoring what he described as an attack on Russian students in Starobelsk.

Speaking at a press briefing following a state visit to Kazakhstan, Putin said foreign journalists were distorting public perception by failing to report on civilian casualties in the incident. He argued that this selective coverage misleads audiences and undermines journalistic integrity.

Putin stated that media organizations had not sufficiently reported on the deaths of students in Starobelsk, where a professional college and associated dormitories were reportedly struck during hostilities. He accused international outlets of ignoring what he described as a tragedy involving young civilians.

He further criticized what he characterized as disproportionate attention given to Russia’s subsequent military actions, arguing that these were framed solely as acts of aggression without context regarding the preceding events.

Russian officials have previously described the strike on Starobelsk as a deliberate attack on a civilian educational facility, while also maintaining that subsequent Russian strikes targeted military infrastructure. The incident has been presented by Moscow as part of a broader pattern of what it calls targeted attacks on civilian sites.

The controversy has intensified debate over media framing of the conflict, particularly regarding which events receive international attention and how competing narratives are presented. Russian representatives have accused Western governments and media organizations of ignoring or downplaying certain incidents while emphasizing others.

The visit also included claims that journalists from multiple countries were invited to view the site, while some major international broadcasters reportedly declined participation.
