Armenian Opposition Moves to Dispute Parliamentary Vote Outcome
According to preliminary figures, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party secured 49.81% of the vote in Sunday’s election, positioning it to establish the country’s next government. Pashinyan’s campaign centered on strengthening Armenia’s integration with the European Union.
Finishing in second place was the Strong Armenia party, led by Russian-Armenian entrepreneur Samvel Karapetyan, which received 23.29% of ballots cast. The Armenia Alliance followed with 9.94% support. Both opposition groups advocated maintaining a more cautious foreign policy approach and preserving close relations with Russia, a key economic partner for Armenia and home to a substantial Armenian community.
The election campaign was marked by controversy. According to reports, authorities attempted to prevent the Strong Armenia party from participating in the vote, although the effort was ultimately unsuccessful. In addition, six candidates affiliated with the party were detained during the campaign period.
Karapetyan, who remains under house arrest over allegations that he was involved in planning a coup, claimed that roughly one hundred of his supporters were taken into custody over the course of Saturday and Sunday.
Reports from election observers also pointed to a range of alleged irregularities during voting. Some monitors stated that they encountered pressure and intimidation from unidentified individuals while carrying out their duties at polling locations.
The opposition now argues that these developments raise serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and warrant a formal challenge to the announced results.
